How-to steps · Full guide
Knowledge Panel and Wikidata, step by step
These are the two entity records machines lean on most. Both reward the same thing: facts that independent sources can back up.
Claim your Knowledge Panel
Chapter 7
- Search your exact brand name on Google, signed in to a Google account. If a panel appears beside the results, you have one.
- At the bottom of the panel (sometimes under About; on mobile, in the menu) choose Claim this knowledge panel.
- Verify by signing in to an official profile Google already links to you: your Search Console property, or your official YouTube, X or Facebook account.
- Once verified, choose Suggest edits at the top of the panel, then Edit beside the item, and add a supporting link for each change.
- Not every panel can be claimed, and Google will not create one on request. It appears when Google is confident about the entity: the rest of this page, and chapter 7, are how you get there.
Not verified, but something is wrong? Use Feedback at the bottom of the panel, pick the wrong fact and suggest the correct one with a source.

Check you are eligible for Wikidata
Chapters 4 and 7
Wikidata keeps an item that meets at least one of three tests: it has a Wikipedia (or other Wikimedia) page; it is a clearly identifiable entity that can be described using serious, publicly available references; or another item needs it. For most businesses that means the second test: independent coverage such as news, trade press, or a government or industry register. Your own website alone is not enough, Wikipedia is not accepted as a source, and items without references get deleted.

Create the item
Chapters 4 and 7
- Create a free account at wikidata.org and search first: your business may already have an item.
- Choose Create a new Item in the left menu. Add the label (your business name), a description written as a short phrase, not a sentence (for example
Australian online furniture retailer; it cannot repeat the label), and any aliases (trading names). - Once the item exists, use + add statement for instance of (business or a more specific type), country, official website, inception (founding date) and headquarters location.
- Under each statement choose + add reference: reference URL for a web source or stated in for a publication, plus retrieved (the date you checked it). Then publish.
- Link the item from your Organization schema
sameAs(templates), and recheck it each quarter: anyone can edit it.

Check your Wikidata item
Chapter 10
- Open your item on wikidata.org: search your business name; its address ends in a Q number.
- Check each statement (instance of, country, official website, inception, headquarters) against the independent source in its reference. Fix anything wrong with edit.
- Any statement without a reference: add one with + add reference (a reference URL, then retrieved), or remove the statement if nothing independent supports it.
- Check the label, description and aliases still match your current name and what you do.
- Set a quarterly reminder. Anyone can edit an item, and yours feeds the entity data AI systems lean on.
